Everything we ate in NYC: Day 2

It’s practically a requirement to eat a Dunkin’ Donut when you’re on the East Coast! This was the day we hopped on the subway near our hotel in Chelsea, got off near Central Park, and walked from Stawberry Fields over to the Met.
We stumbled on the Dumpling Truck!! SO excited!!! If you didn’t already know, the latest restaurant trend (especially in New York and LA) isn’t restaurants at all – it’s gourmet food served out of roving kitchens in brightly painted trucks. They all have Twitter accounts, and they tweet when and where they’ll be parked around the city. It was nothing but good luck that we found this one. Remember Anito Lo, from Top Chef Masters? This truck is hers, and the Pork & Chinese Scallion Dumplings I ordered were nothing short of amazing.
Several hours later, we’d wound our way through Central Park, where everything was covered in a lovely blanket of snow, and seen about a gajillion pieces of amazing art at the Met. This is Yo running from the monster in Cloverfield.
And because let’s face it - I’m about ten years old deep down, and this is what I took the most pictures of at the Met:
There’s just something hilarious about butts! Just me? I refuse to believe that - I dare you to get through this series with nary a giggle.
Told you so. By this time it was heading towards late afternoon, so we decided to fortify ourselves with a little something sweet and set out for Katz’s Deli.
Finding Katz’s was an ordeal in and of itself, partly because we detoured in Chinatown for a little touristy shopping. We eventually made it there, and were totally confused by series of lines and tables all over the place. We eventually just vultured a seat on the waiter service only side, and immediately tucked into the huge plate of pickles that comes requisite with every order. My personal favorite were the milder, lighter green garlic pickles.
I tried to eat the “quintessential” food whenever I could, which at a landmark New York deli means a Reuben to eat, and a chocolate egg cream to drink.
Katz’s pastrami and corned beef takes something like 30 days to make, and it’s amazing. This was easily one of the best sandwiches I’ve even eaten in my entire life. Holy cow. Literally. Yolanda was pretty excited about her matza ball soup, too.
We were total old ladies by the end of this day, I think we were back to the hotel and out cold by 8:30!

You would not BELIEVE the adventure we had!!!

I don’t have nearly the energy to post about all of it tonight, so in the mean time here’s the proof of my checking off a very important item on my “reso-maybes” list, along with everything we ate on our first night in NYC:

That’s Michael Symon! And that’s my chef’s coat!
This was an appetizer of roasted pork, fried rice (literally, that’s what that ball is) and chili lime sauce. The name of the the dish completely escapes me.
My entree was crazy good – it was uber crispy pork belly with tons of crunchy green beans, all tossed in a chili sauce so spicy it made me sniffle a little. Again, the name escapes me – I texted everything to Yo, I’ll have to bug her for details tomorrow. It was all Vietnamese and Thai food, so most of the words I’d never even heard before!
Just a little something sweet from a giant gourmet store we wandered through, called Garden of Eden.

Pppffffbbbbttttt.

That’s what I have to say about Valentine’s Day this year, as it got off to a pretty rocky start. I spent a good part of the day stewing and fuming in my apartment, cleaning and half paying attention to the TV. I then spent a very short portion of it blubbering on the phone like a big dumb girl, rambling about hormones and hating being a big dumb girl. Tears are usually enough to send any guy into enough of a panic that they’ll come running and quickly do whatever they can to make them stop, and mine is no exception. The day wound up being mostly salvaged, with a walk (to a bar) for a drink (vodka tonic please), and dinner at a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try since it opened almost a year ago (El Zarape’s sit down locale). Another cocktail (La Posada de Jamaica) and some crazy good enchiladas (chicken with mole sauce) later, and I was feeling cheery enough to want to bake. One of the things I’d paid half attention to on the TV earlier in the afternoon was Tyler Florence baking a four ingredient chocolate cake. “I can totally do that” was all that ran through my head at the time, but several hours later I found myself rooting for ingredients. Everything that goes into this cake can be seen right here in this picture:

Chocolate, butter, eggs, sugar. That’s it. It’s a flourless cake, so when it comes out of the oven it’s all crackly and crunchy on top, and sinks in the middle.

A proper finish would be a sprinkling powdered sugar on top, but I forgot so you’ll just have to use your imagination.

Cracked Chocolate Earth
Tyler Florence

1 lb dark chocolate (60-70%)
2 sticks unsalted butter
9 eggs, separated
3/4 cup granulated sugar

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Melt chocolate and butter together in a double boiler, taking care not to burn.
Separate egg whites from yolks into two bowls.
Whisk 3/4 cup sugar into yolks until creamy and pale yellow.
Whip egg whites with a whisk or electric mixer until they’ve increased in volume and hold soft peaks.
Ladel a little of the chocolate/butter mixture into the yolk/sugar mixture and whisk to combine and bring the eggs up to temp.
Add the rest of the chocolate and combine completely.
Add the beaten eggs whites and gently fold in, trying not to deflate them. Keep at it until everything is combined.
Pour batter into a buttered 9″ spring form pan, and bake for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cool slightly, then release from pan.
Serve warm with whipped cream, ice cream, or just plain old by itself. It was good yesterday, but it was even better today after everything had a little time to really sit and marry together.
